Cycling safety

The recent death of cycling safety campaigner Mike Gough in George St, Huntingdon prompted Mark Argent to talk with Edna Murphy, who is the Liberal Democrat candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire.

Edna said “It brings home the need to continue to improve safety for cyclists, creating much safer routes for cyclists and also pedestrians. Reducing speed alone can make a big difference, although obviously there are many more things that can and should be done.”

Mark added that “Cycling and walking are good for people’s mental and physical health and for the environment, whether we’re thinking of climate change or pollution.

“Cycling isn’t always practical for everyone or for every journey. Some people can’t cycle, and some journeys, particularly in rural areas, are too far to be done by bike or with children or carrying shopping. That is why we still need to press for better public transport to offer people more environmentally sustainable transport alternatives.’
