More jobs, better health, real change: Lib Dems launch 2026 HDC manifesto
The Liberal Democrats have set out plans to grow the local economy, invest in health facilities, and deliver real change for the area as they launch their campaign for the upcoming Huntingdonshire District Council elections.
For the first time, they are running a full slate of 52 candidates, in contrast to Labour and the Green Party, showing that the Lib Dems are the only party that can stop the Conservatives and Reform UK from dragging Huntingdonshire backwards.
The party is currently the second largest on HDC with 16 councillors, compared to the Conservatives’ 18 seats. The Lib Dems are aiming to replace the Tories as the largest party on the council, where 27 seats are needed for a majority. They hope to build on local success at the 2024 general election and 2025 county council election.
The manifesto confirms that a Liberal Democrat majority administration at HDC would:
- Attract more jobs and investment to Huntingdonshire, including the defence cluster around RAF Wyton, which the party has championed
- Continue investment in local health and leisure facilities, including the new swimming pool at OneLeisure Huntingdon
- Help people live healthier by improving their quality of life, and supporting the NHS by preventing health issues
- Build on the support provided to help people during the cost of living crisis, including continuing the recently introduced 100% council tax support
- Protect the local environment by investing in local nature recovery and clean energy
- Ensure Huntingdonshire has a strong voice in shaping its future, and champion Huntingdonshire's unique identity
Cllr Sarah Conboy, Huntingdonshire Lib Dem Group Leader, said:
“The Liberal Democrats are standing up for local people here in Huntingdonshire. Every day we're demanding better for residents, challenging decades of Conservative failure, and focusing on delivering on local priorities.”
“We're helping the most vulnerable in our communities, growing the local economy, reopening leisure facilities, protecting our local environment, and cleaning up the mess that the Conservatives left behind after nearly 50 years in charge.”
“Now we're setting out our plans for the final years of HDC. We're focused on bringing jobs and investment to Huntingdonshire, investing in the leisure facilities that people rely on, helping people with the cost of living, and protecting our local environment.”
Ian Sollom, Liberal Democrat MP for St Neots and Mid Cambs, said:
“The Conservatives were in power at every level in Huntingdonshire for decades, and they let our area down. They crashed the economy when in government, let our roads crumble, and left a black hole in local finances.”
“Reform UK aren't any better. Where they run councils they're busy fighting between themselves, breaking promises, and letting people down.”
“The Lib Dems have a track record of getting things done and are the only party that can deliver the change our area needs. Only the Lib Dems have a positive vision for our area, and your Lib Dem councillors will work tirelessly for their communities year round.”
“The choice on the 7th of May is clear: moving forward with the Lib Dems, or division with a Conservative and Reform coalition of chaos.”
