“Fix politics to fix real life issues and end revolving door PMs”, say Hunts Lib Dems

Local Liberal Democrats are continuing calls to reform the UK’s voting system to fix the services people rely on, and following the resignation of another Prime Minister, end the political chaos which has blocked real change.

Across England, May’s elections saw a wildly disproportionate set of local election results. In Wigan, Reform won 96% of the seats on 46% of the vote, while in Richmond Liberal Democrats won 100% of the seats on 51% of the vote.

This has been matched with a lack of change in Westminster, where in 2024 Labour won 63% of seats on 34% of the vote. Following this, there has been a lack of change, with the “merry go round” of Prime Ministers continuing and little improvement to people's daily lives.

Up and down the country, voters have been left with councils which simply do not reflect the diversity of views in modern Britain, and a political system which is leading to chaos instead of positive change. This continues to drive anger, frustration, and apathy.

Against this background, the Labour Government is progressing the Representation of the People Bill - while actively preventing amendments which might force a change in the voting system.

Liberal Democrats in Huntingdonshire and across the UK are calling for the voting system to change so that the seats won by a party matches the proportion of votes that party received. This would force politicians to work harder for people's votes, make councillors and MPs focus on the issues that matter to real people, and fix the broken system which has failed to deliver for real people.

The Liberal Democrats are running a national survey asking voters if they think politics is working for them. They believe that the very real frustration voters feel needs to be heard by all political parties.

They are also calling on the new Prime Minister to make electoral reform a priority for their government.

Cllr Debbie Mickelburgh, Chair of the Huntingdon Liberal Democrats, said:

“Our divided politics is what's blocking the real change we need to see in our country - it encourages our representatives to endlessly argue with each other rather than actually get things done.”

“We need to fix politics so we can fix our NHS, fix our education system, and end the chaos of the past decade. Changing our voting system is one of the best things we can do to turn things around and see the real change people need.”

Cllr Nathan Hunt, Vice Chair of the Huntingdon Liberal Democrats, said:

“Britain’s political system is meant to serve the country, but instead we're seeing a ‘merry go round’ of Prime Ministers, councils that don't reflect how people voted, and chaos instead of problems being fixed. We’re launching this survey to give people that chance to tell politicians what they really think, because we believe politicians of all parties need to hear it.”

“The new Prime Minister will need to listen to those calls and fix our broken politics to have any chance to deliver the change we desperately need.”
